Monkey Mind: No more bananas!

Tonight I listened to the one hour interview of Dr. Alejandro Junger, courtesy of Dhrumil at We Like It Raw.

Monkey Mind is that inner voice jabbering away at you, criticizing, judging, blaming, doubting, and worrying. Everyone has some Monkey Mind chatter going on. It's part of being human. In fact, experts say that of our 25,000 to 60,000 thoughts a day, 90% of them are critical and the majority of these critical thoughts are aimed at ourselves.

The critical voice of Monkey Mind is often the biggest obstacle you face in creating a happy, fulfilling life. This kind of commentary droning on in your head can drain your energy and either slow you down or completely stop you from knowing and creating what you truly want in life.

Below you will find a yotube video posted by Dhrumil of Welikeitraw.com.

Dr. Junger is due to publish a book by the name of CLEANSE in 2009. Keep your eyes open. To see the entire interview with Dr. Alejandro Junger please see We Like it Raw

Get Back To You

Get Back to You...so to those of you who feel all down in the dumps when you make a poor choice - don't get down on yourself, just find a way back to what makes you feel more vibrant.

In the spirit of this reminder here is a 50 second of our six year old Drama Queen singing Get Back To You at the Demi Lovato concert at the Texas State Fair on Sunday.

Finding healthy food at the fair was a toughie. I found a Greek Salad and lots of water while the rest of the family enjoyed huge turkey legs, Fletcher's corn dogs, mini corn dogs, chicken strips, cotton candy, Philly Cheese Steak, and almost the chicken fried bacon.

Monstera : Whole Foods Field Trip part 3

Another beautiful Saturday in Texas and like clockwork, my son and I went on our weekly field trip to Whole Foods (Plano, TX).
Each Saturday Mike and I go to WF in search for exotic new items, most specifically exotic fruits to add to our weekly cart of yummy organic groceries.

Each Saturday we hook up with Scott, WF's main man of the produce section (See earlier post when we videotaped Scott telling us about the rambutan.)

Well today we met the MONSTERA !

From the label we learned that the MONSTERA, also known as the monstera deliciosa, tastes like a cross between a banana and pineapple. Use in custards, with cereal, drinks, shakes, sauces, and a variety of desserts. Note-wait for the exterior green scales to fall away naturally (looks like it is rotting) and then enjoy the creamy white flesh inch by inch. "A tropical delight!"

The monstera comes from the inside of the split-leaf philodendron! It grows out of the flower. Also called Mexican Breadfruit or Swiss Cheese Plant. One of the best descriptions of the monstera is found here

The Monstera is also called Mexican Breadfruit or Swiss Cheese Plant.

Bunny Berry: Revival Time

I started watching this DIVA after she had only posted a few videos on youtube. Along the way I sent an email to Penni Shelton alerting her to my dear Bunny. In RubyVroom/ Penni Shelton style she was able to launch the news to the entire raw food community and beyond. Bunny is an inspiration to thousands already> Bunny is honest, inspiring, funny, and extremely talented in high technology and designing user interfaces (computer stuff in layman's terms)

If you have not watched Bunny Berry before, or even better-met her in person, you should put it on your TO DO list today!

I love COMMUNITY!

No Shit! Colonic Virgin Part 1

Today I succumbed to peer pressure initiated by Matt Monarch, Penni Shelton and most recently, Bunny Berry and showed up for my first colonic at Dallas Colon Care, in Dallas, Texas (of course.)

I was a nervous little Fu, until I met Mary, my colon therapist. Mary is the mother of Deanna who actually owns the clinic, but Deanna was away working on opening her second location in Plano, TX. Mary shared with me her experiences with how colon cancer has ravished her family (my heart was so sad for her) but her daughter, and now Mary have made it their life's work to help bring cleansing and healing to others.

I did not bring my video with me to Dallas Colon Care, but the following video will give a little schooling to any of you who are colonic virgins, .... as I was UNTIL TODAY.

And you know what, my friends, it wasn't nearly as strange as I imagined once it all started. In fact, I am returning next Tuesday for a followup!

(Bonus: I was able to text my hubby and tell him "I'm not full of shit anymore" and he got a kick out of the joke. OK OK - I've said it before...I am a dork, but that's ok with me these days!)

Pee test for what? My own momsraw vitamin?

Why guess which nutrients you need from the bewildering variety of popular “in-vogue” or “one-size-fits-all” supplements? PrivaTest is an accurate, scientific look into your personal biochemistry. Using a simple in-home urine collection, it provides an individualized reading of the amount of nutritional support needed by key areas of your metabolism. PrivaTest measures Urinary Sulfates (needed for your liver’s detoxification processes), Urinary Lipid Peroxides (determines general antioxidant status), and Urinary Nitrates (compounds involved in many body systems including: the immune system, the nervous system, and the circulatory system).

Based on the results of your PrivaTest, your Custom Essentials will be formulated out of a possible 48 different combinations of 50 key nutrients. Custom Essentials is a customized formula of pharmaceutical-grade vitamins, chelated minerals, amino acids, and phytonutrients in a rich, natural-foods base. You will be shipped your first 30-day supply of Custom Essentials along with your detailed PrivaTest Report, and and your originating credit card will be charged.

My Bookshelf: Raw Nutrition Update

I have been asked by several friends of Twitter and Blogger what I am reading these days. Well I like to have my hands in many books at a time, as I cross check facts and compare ideas. (Note: since childhood I have been a voracious reader and a read very very fast. It drives my family crazy how fast I read at times. )

Here is what you will find on my desk today (changes daily):

In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan
Captivating by John & Stasi Eldredge
Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin (haven't started this one yet)
Rawsome! by Brigette Mars
Beauty by Brigette Mars
Addiction Free Naturally by Brigette Mars
Natural Highs by Hayla Cass, M.D.
The Raw Food Detox Diet by Natalia Rose
Nutrition and Cancer by Cherie Calbom
Anticancer-A New Way of Life by David Servan-Schreiber, M.D., PhD (New bestseller!)
The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan
The No-Dairy Breast Cancer Prevention Program by Jane A. Plant, PhD
Eating In The Raw by Carol Alt
and Crazy Sexy Cancer Tips by Kris Carr (The hit of Raw Spirit Festival in my book)*

I had an autographed copy of Crazy Sexy Cancer Survivor until yesterday. I gave it to a lovely lady (C.C.) at my husband's work who is battling cancer and juicing like crazy!

I have a quite a few more Raw Cookbooks as well, but they are in the kitchen, not my corner office :) Corner of my bedroom that is!

If you are looking to purchase any of these books you can click on my Amazon link (right lower side) and it will take you directly to my favorite online book retailer.

Happy Reading!

Burn Your Bra for Breast Health

The following article was sent to me by a new friend (The Breast Diva) who is passionate about early detection for breast cancer. She spends a great deal of time educating others about breast cancer and new technology to self detect breast lumps. She is also featured on a radio show on Blog Talk Radio. Debbie represents a company which sells a tool to better feel tiny lumps in your breasts and a special creme that is purported to increase breast health. I have not tried these products, but I do believe that the breast detection kit itself warrants a good look.

Here is an article Debbie (aka The Breast Diva) sent me yesterday:

Bras and Breast Cancer
by Ralph L. Reed, Ph.D.

Although I am an environmental chemist (Ph.D in biochemistry), I have been doing a lot of literature research on breast cancer since I saw an article on the National Library of Medicine database over a year ago. That article documented an increase in breast cancer rates between women who do wear bras versus those that do not.
That Harvard study fascinated me and I searched the medical literature for possible explanations. In January 1996, I discovered the book by Singer and Grismaijer and their explanation of impaired lymphatic flow intrigued me. I have since read everything that I can find on lymphatic flow. What I have found has amazed me, but that is another story. I can supply you with lots of info if you like. In essence, what Singer and Grismaijer found was that the odds of getting breast cancer dramatically increased with bra-wearing over 12 hours per day.
Women who wore their bras 24 hours per day had a 3 out of 4 chance of developing breast cancer (in their study, n=2056 for the cancer group and n=2674 for the standard group).
Women who wore bras more than 12 hour per day but not to bed had a 1 out of 7 risk.
Women who wore their bras less than 12 hours per day had a 1 out of 152 risk.
Women who wore bras rarely or never had a 1 out of 168 chance of getting breast cancer. The overall difference between 24 hour wearing and not at all was a 125-fold difference.
The results of this study are compelling, even considering that it was not a "controlled study" for other risk factors. Bear in mind that known (published in medical journals) risk factors for breast cancer are mostly in the range of less than three-fold differences. It should also be noted that Singer and Grismaijer surveyed bra-wearing behavior of the past, which is excellent for a disease with such a long development period. In their book, the authors show how most of the known risk factors can be related to bra-wearing behavior and/or the lymphatic system.
For example, breast feeding and pregnancy cause full development of the mammary lymphatics. Also, women of higher economic status have higher breast cancer rates, and one would expect that they would wear their bras more hours per day. Women who exercise have lower risk, which could relate to better lymphatic circulation (and I would add, more breast movement).
To this discussion, I would like to add that lymphatic circulations in many tissues (especially the primary lymphatics) are highly dependent on MOVEMENT. When you sit for a long time on an airplane flight, your feet and ankles can swell, because lymphatic circulation goes to near zero. Wearing a bra, especially a constricting one with underwires, and especially to bed, prevents normal lymphatic flow and would likely lead to anoxia (lower than normal oxygen content), which has been related to fibrosis, which has been linked to increased cancer risk.
Women evolved under conditions where there was BREAST MOVEMENT with every step that they took when they walked or ran. My reading of the scientific literature about lymphatic flow shows me that this may be as important as the constriction factor. Every subtle bounce of the breast while moving, walking, and running, etc. gently massages the breast and increases lymphatic flow; thus cleanses the breast of toxins and wastes that arise from cellular metabolism.
Of course, there may be other mechanisms for the damage that bras apparently cause. One such mechanism could be temperature. Breasts are external organs and have a naturally lower temperature. Cancers can be temperature-dependent. Breast cancer is hormone-dependent. Temperature can alter hormone function. Breast temperature changes throughout the monthly cycle.
All these facts are from the medical literature. By whatever mechanism, someone will eventually explain why Singer and Grismaijer found a 125-fold difference in cancer rates between bra-free breasts and those constricted by 24-hour-per-day bra-wearing.
If you haven't already done so, I suggest that you read the book by Singer and Grismaijer ( Dressed to Kill, Avery Press, 1995). (By the way, I have no connection to the authors; I think that they live in Canada.)
Also, just for an interesting experiment, the next time you walk down the street, notice visually how constricting bras are. On many women you can actually see "dents" around the sides of their chests where there bras are, even in something as opaque as a black t-shirt.
A physical therapist friend of mine, after reading Dressed to Kill, said that she was amazed at what she saw in her practice at a local medical clinic. She noticed how many women have red creases and grooves on their bodies caused by their bras. Singer and Grismajer also suggest that you simply stop wearing one for two weeks and see how you feel.
By the way, I have heard that they are currently working on a new study. The research is to study whether benign fibrocystic breast disease can be treated by stopping bra-wearing for eight weeks. That should be very interesting; this time they are involving medical doctors, from what I've heard.
Years ago, many people thought that the idea of cigarettes causing lung cancer was funny. Even if further research with highly controlled studies only shows a difference of 5-fold, or even 2-fold, it will be no laughing matter.

I've got my big girl panties on!

Today I made a HUGE decision about the path my life is taking. I have been preparing for the beginning of graduate school in Conflict Resolution and Arbitration, a logical fit to my undergraduate degree in psychology and years of social work, graduate legal training and law firm experience. The pay would be lucrative and the stress could be intense.

BUT (always a BIG But isn't there...)

I had a confirmation of the passion in my life when at Raw Spirit Festival. I asked myself when was I most happy, what subject do I read about every spare moment in my day, and what could affect more lives in a peaceful, restorative and healing way....and the only answer was to pursue graduate education in Holistic Wellness and Therapeutic Nutrition.

WOW. I said it. I am going to change course away from what others wish for my life and what I feel driven to pursue. This is a biggie because I have lost alot of joy and soulfulness by being a people pleaser and for a long time I couldn't even answer the question "What makes me happy".

So today I contacted my academic advisor at the university and withdrew from the Conflict Resolution and Mediation program and started my application and essay to attend Clayton College of Natural Health.

I have already contacted a handful of Clayton Graduates and have heard nothing but praise for the education they received. I am targeting the Master of Science in Holistic Nutrition first and possibly also complete the Doctor of Naturopathy in time.

So there! Today I put my big girl panties on and claimed my path.

Bitch Away

banner1

I have become increasingly more aware of certain people who always have a problem with something. It is like a fountain of negativity flowing like a river every time they open their mouths. I believe that we all fall victim to the "poor me" mentality from time to time, but I am trying to catch myself when something self depreciating comes out of my mouth or takes up residence in my thoughts.

Recently I was in the presence of a person whose judgments of others affected everyone around. An ever present sense of stress permeated all others in proximity to Grumpy Girl. Although I know that Grumpy Girl was projecting her own inner pain, fear of abandonment, and self loathing on others, I did find myself wanting to flee the tension filled surroundings.

So here is my challenge for you - we have just under 2 weeks until Official Bitch Day - so in these coming days lets try to bottle up our bitchiness (inner AND outer bitchiness) and save it up for Official Bitch Day.

On October 1, 2008, for the first time ever women of all ages and backgrounds have the opportunity to let it all out and let their true feelings heard. Fabulously40 will allow you to gain freedom and liberation, by bitching about everything and anything, in a safe, protected environment. The day will be full of bitching events. Win prizes, meet women, and most importantly- LET IT ALL OUT! Join now to register for Fabulously40 and participate in the Official bitch Day.

Back in the Real World: Life after Raw Spirit Festival

Over a tasty lunch of watercress, avocado, cucumber, microgreens, nori wraps (with a splash of namu shoyu) I began contemplating pieces of conversations shared with friends at Raw Spirit Festival.

Over the next few weeks I will share with you different moments of insight derived from my experience in Sedona with Penni Shelton and Bunny Berry. Other contributors to my insightful experiences were Raw Buddies, Dea Living Lotus, Jo Thomas,  and WendiDee
(among others.)

Today I found myself considering that a raw food diet is not just about adding healthy raw choices to my diet, it is recently becoming more of an exercise in subtracting certain habits, emotions and even belongings.

As I feel the changes manifesting on the outside, I feel rumblings of change on the inside. On the way to Raw Spirit Festival I was warned by our hitchhiking traveler Marchia, that coming to Sedona would open the doors to an inner shift. (To which I laughed and stated that I was an emotional stuffer and I had no intention of leaking.)

Needless to say, whether it was the close female companionship with likeminded Raw Fu ladies or the mysterious vortexes of Sedona (what's that about anyway?) - I did experience a mental/emotional/physical shift during this weekend. (Ok, ok,..I leaked a little too)

For one, I have returned home with a compulsive desire to start giving stuff away (or throwing stuff away).

This is only the beginning of the physical and emotional changes I sense in my life. It starts with beginning to rid myself of clothing which is either too big or too small. No more saving that pair of jeans from high school or saving that heavy winter coat which I will never need in Dallas, Texas.

I have also decided to change my field of studies for Graduate School - from a Masters Degree in Conflict Resolution and Arbitration to Graduate studies in Therapeutic Nutrition and Wellness. (I will blog separately about graduate studies in nutrition and wellness later this week).

So I invite you to join me in cleaning your closets and revaluating your life's path...I am here to listen and support you anytime.

Stay tuned!

Note: to hear more about our drive to Sedona see Penni's Real Food Tulsa Blog. And of course, my other awesome roommate Bunny Berry will also be filling your ears and eyes with more of our Girls Gone Raw adventures in Sedona ! Nothing like it...I feel something big coming, mark my words...

I have returned recharged and am fully confident in the Lord who leads me and guides me daily in a path to bring increasing health, healing and growth, not only to myself - but to others.

(And let me give you a hint - going RAW is not just about eating your veggies! Its about exorcising the internal and external waste in our lives, healing wounds, changing patterns, and becoming the physical and spiritual being the Lord has intended us to be.)

Raw Spirit Festival: The Highlight of my Raw Spirit Festival Experience

When I first became curious about a raw food diet it was because I felt that inside I had a burning feeling that my body was out of balance.

Then one day I turned the television on...something I rarely ever do, seriously....and the channel was on Oprah and there was a beautiful and vibrant young lady named Kris Carr

Actress and photographer Kris Carr thought she had a hangover, but a Jivamukti yoga class didn't provide its usual kick-ass cure. A visit to her doctor confirmed her "liver looked like Swiss cheese," covered with cancerous tumors. She entered trench warfare (wearing cowboy boots into the MRI machine, no less), vowing, "Cancer needed a makeover and I was just the gal to do it!" She began writing and filming her journey, documenting her interactions with friends, doctors, alternative "quacks," blind dates, and other women with cancer—sadly a growing group. These include hip, young women such as illustrator-author Marisa Acocella Marchetto (Cancer Vixen), Glamour writer-editor Erin Zammett (My So-Called Normal Life), MTV personality Diem Brown (Real World/Road Rules Challenge), model Sharon Blynn (founder, Bald Is Beautiful), and music manager Jackie Farry, among others.

I found a great interview with Kris Carr, if you have time, check it out here.

Kris is an incredible and entertaining speaker, I feel she really connected with the entire audience at Raw Spirit Festival. After the show Penni and I asked to get her picture and I mentioned Rawfu.com. Immediately Kris said, "You're with Raw Fu?" We enthusiastically said yes and offered to go get Bunny Berry so Kris could meet her (apparently Kris had just recently heard about the whole Rawfu.com phenomenon.) So off like a speeding rocket I ran to find Bunny Berry while Penni started trying to locate her by phone.

In no time at all we were able to find Bunny and bring her to meet Kris Carr in person.

Name this Fruit: Taking my son to Whole Foods for a field trip

Today we met Scott, Whole Foods Plano (Preston and Park) produce guru. This is a brief video when he shows my son Mike about an exotic new fruit. (Tomorrow we are doing a home experiment with 4 exotic fruits that Mike chose - I hope to get a video of this as well.)

Any knowledge of the fruit on this video, please send me a link. I wrote the name down on my hand, with the correct spelling, but I washed my hand super well before I did a big juice production this afternoon, and now I  cannot read what I wrote on my hand! Sounds like ranmatan?

Why I don't have to bring a juicer wherever I go

No more lugging a juicer or Blendtec when traveling - this video from Tonya Kay reminded me to keep it simple everyday in my travels. Hope you find a nugget of wisdom as well.

Tonya Kay: No More Guilt - Transitioning to raw

This was filmed at a Dalla Raw Food Meetup this spring (before I moved to Plano area). I am overwhelmed with how well Tonya Kay sums it all up. This is the best guilt buster and confidence builder I have seen. Awesome.

For more info on the fabulous Tonya click here.

Ugly Duckling: I don't fit in with Plastic People

No matter who you are, or where you live, you will find Plastic People. You will also find fantastic people - that even if you don't speak their language - that there can be a connection.

I think even Plastic People, hoity-toities, have feelings deep down under their botoxed, collagened, heavy makeuped,bling-blinged selves...so don't quit trying to establish connections. Just keep reaching out, as humans we are meant to reach out.

Rising Raw Food Star: Miranda Martinez, Dallas

I was looking through the membership of Meetup for Dallas/Plano, TX raw foodists and I ran across Miranda Martinez . Please check out her website Viva Raw. I have included here two videos from a local source, DVTV, to give you a glimpse at a rising raw food star...giving you a before and after glimpse at a 30 day raw vegan challenge.

On the way home from DMV

On the way home from the Driver's License Place I stumbled upon Georgia's Farmers Market (in Old Town Plano,TX). Needless to say I was quite pleased, after 4 weeks in Texas I had yet to stumble upon a nearby source for local produce.

Highlights:

Produce is grown locally and picked daily. (not picked when green and artificially stimulated to ripen on a schedule with grow lights and the spraying of chemicals/gasses like at grocery stores)

Raw almonds. Yes! If you haven't heard about the new mandate that almonds must be pastuerized there is alot of information on the internet on sites like this. There is a loophole... U.S. farmers are still allowed to sell truly raw (unpasteurized) almonds directly to the consumer. They do this by way of roadside markets, phone orders, mail orders, and the internet. Be sure to ask the farmer if the almonds have been pasteurized.

Huge, lucious tomatoes. enough said.

Local Bee Pollen. Bee pollen is a natural food. It is not a drug. Honeybee pollen contains every known vitamin, all of the minerals, proteins (amino acids), enzymes and coenzymes, fatty acids, and carbohydrates that our bodies need to sustain life, and all in perfect balance.Take Bee Pollen only in the WHOLE GRAIN natural form.Bee Pollen is a complete food. The optimum of vigor and resistance to poor health and disease is gained by adding pollen to your diet EVERYDAY. Studies have shown that people can live indefinitely on a diet of Bee pollen and water. Chemical analyses show quality Bee Pollen contains every nutrient necessary to life! (information taken from http://www.localharvest.org/)

In addition, Vic at Georgia's Farmers Market shared with me documentation which describes how local bee pollen helps with allergies, weight loss, energy without jitters, skin and hair, and sexual stamina.

Dublin Dr. Pepper. If you haven't tried it, you have missed out. You can find out more about Dr. Pepper's history here. Dublin Dr. Pepper is the original Dr. Pepper made with pure sugar from the Imperial Sugar Company instead of cheap corn syrup.

So off I go to go juice up some of the yummies I gathered at Georgia's Farmers Market, but in the meantime I encourage you to find a local farmers market and spend time with the owners. There is a wealth of information to be learned! (You might even find me volunteering to go visit the actual farmers behind the scene in the very near future...)
